Encounter Bay was named by Matthew Flinders. The name comes from his encounter with Frenchman Nicolas Baudin. Both men were charting the Australian coastline for their countries. Despite being under the impression that Britain and France were still at war, their meeting was peaceful. (The Treaty of Amiens was signed around about the same time as their encounter, but they would only have heard of the cease in hostilities a long time afterwards. )
